Kansai Market Moving Toward the Expo

Large-Scale Investment in Preparation for Expo Boosts the Kansai Region

The Royal Hotel Osaka in Nakanoshima, Osaka, has sold its property to an overseas real estate firm and will transition to a foreign brand.
The Royal Hotel has entered into a capital business partnership with BGO, with BGO acquiring a 33% stake in the Royal Hotel and becoming the largest shareholder. They have also partnered with IHG Hotels & Resorts, changing the name of the new hotel to "The Royal Hotel Osaka - Vignette Collection," to be reopened after renovations in March 2025. The operation of the revamped hotel will also be entrusted to the Royal Hotel under a basic agreement with BGO.
With the hosting of the Expo in 2025 acting as a catalyst, it is expected that several foreign luxury hotel brands besides IHG will be established in the city by that year. Osaka, which has had few luxury hotels for many years, will see development accelerate from 2023. In a bid to capture the accommodation demand from affluent visitors and officials from various countries attending the Expo, Osaka is witnessing a fierce competition among top-tier hotel brands alongside the Expo. Among these, the Hilton-affiliated "Waldorf Astoria Osaka" is particularly noteworthy.
